I have a few questions about Miss Miller in the CGI show. What purpose does she serve? Is her role supposed to be the same as it was in the 80's? And why are the Chipettes' last names Miller if they don't live with her?
Her purpose isn't really clear at all right now; she just seems like a regular neighbor. Perhaps it's just for nostalgia from the 80s? From what we've seen, Dave takes more care of the girls than Miss Miller, yet the girls do live in Miss Miller's backyard. Maybe that, and consistency, is why they are Millers.
Well, gonna throw my two cents in here, where I live once you turn 14 you can with a good enough reason, or parental concent live on your own, as they only ever went to live with Miss Miller because they were forced to, it would make sence that if givin the chance the very indipendent girls would go for it.
Also, gonna point out that they are currently living to the side of the Chipmunks house, and the house on that side is vacent since Mr. Crabble moved away, or at least there hasen't been anyone shown living there to my knowledge. If I recall the episode, he wanted the tree gone as it was on his property and he hated it. So the whole living in Miss Miller's backyard, doesen't really hold up unless I've missed something.

Can't speak for Spoiler-its(as I've not had a chance to see it), but I've never seen a shot of the neighbours house with the treehouse visible, or from a viewpoint where they are both visible, the Rose bushes to seem to line up though, but personally for me that's not quite enough to go on. Obviously not vacent like I thought though. (Just rewatched Knights)
I think Miss Miller moved to the Chipmunks' neighbourhood sometime after Mr. Crabble moved to the desert. Her role in the show doesn't seem to involve much interaction with the main characters, especially the Chipettes, so I'm guessing the only reason she's in it at all is likely as a tribute to Dody Goodman.
